The Go-To Guide to Northern New South Wales
Eat, stay and play in NNSW!
The Queensland border bubble has *finally* been extended to include all of Queensland and a pretty large portion of northern New South Wales (including Byron Bay – Zac Efron and Chris Hemsworth here we come!). So, if you’re planning a much needed getaway but you’re not sure where to start, this guide will give you all the inside info you need to know. From where to stay and play to where to eat, we’ve got you sorted.
HALCYON HOUSE | CABARITA BEACH
Halcyon House is potentially the most stunning boutique hotel we’ve ever seen, and that’s a pretty big call. Nestled amongst the pandanus trees right on the pristine Cabarita beach, Halcyon House is the perfect mixture of eclectic meets luxury. You’ll also be able to find the award-winning restaurant Paper Daisy on site as well as the breathtaking Halcyon Spa. Relax and unwind at this coastal haven, you deserve it.
BLACKBIRD | BYRON BAY HINTERLAND
This boutique accommodation promises an escape from the ordinary. At Blackbird you’ll be able to relax amongst the local flora and fauna, visit waterfalls and witness breathtaking sunrises. Designed with inspiration from Moroccan riads and Egyptian luxury, these living pavilions will leave you in a state of total awe. To make Blackbird even more irresistible, they have a magnesium swimming pool which will provide the most pure and natural way to cool off after a hinterland walk.
CAPE BEACH HOUSE | BYRON BAY
A locally owned bed and breakfast, Cape Beach House is the perfect base for your Byron Bay getaway. Wake to the sound of rolling waves in one of their luxurious suites and then head to the pool or down to the beach for a spot of sunbaking. Cape Beach House perfectly captures the relaxed and vacation vibes of Byron Bay, and you will never want to leave once you arrive.
THE BRUNSWICK | BRUNSWICK HEADS
Slightly lesser known than Byron Bay but just as beautiful and vibrant is Brunswick Heads. And there’s no better place to stay than The Brunswick. Located just a stones throw away from Brunswick’s main street and the crystal clear river, The Brunswick promises a calming and laid-back weekend away.
TAVERNA | KINGSCLIFF
Located on Kingscliff’s Marine Parade, this hot spot for Insta pics serves up mouth-watering Greek food. The grilled haloumi is a must and you simply cannot go past their fresh-as-can-be seafood. Taverna is a local favourite for a reason
LA CASITA | BRUNSWICK HEADS
Authentic Mexican in gorgeous Brunswick? Yes please! La Casita’s coliflor tacos can’t be missed, not to mention the slow roasted lamb taco *drool*. Pair your meal with a marg from their extensive margarita list and you’ve got yourself a perfect dining experience.
THE ITALIAN DINER | BANGALOW
You will be transported straight to the streets of Rome with a pasta dish from Bangalow’s Italian Diner. They pride themselves on their hearty dishes made with strong flavours and a passion for Italian food. My tip? You simply can’t go past the vegetarian arancini balls or the lamb ragu – delish!
HARVEST | NEWRYBAR
You can find this gem about 10 minutes inland from Byron Bay, and it is not one to miss. Harvest’s very own woodfired sourdough is what dreams are made of, enjoy as a side with the risotto and you’ve got one hell of a meal. If you’re just driving through, make a quick pit stop at their bakery downstairs and grab a slice of homemade cake.
ZANZIBAR | KINGSCLIFF
Okay, there is no restaurant loved by locals as much as Zanzibar. A Kingscliff institution for over fifteen years, Zanzibar’s Moroccan menu has barely changed in over a decade. Why? Because it’s perfect as is. Grab a takeaway kebab and head down to the beach, or perhaps a burger and wedges is more your style? It’s simple food but done oh so well.
OKKY | POTTSVILLE
Okky is a hole in the wall that is nestled just off Pottsville’s Coronation Avenue. A combination of Japanese food and fish and chips (two of my favourite things), Okky’s food is to die for. Their Japanese vegan curry is totally delish and their chips and gravy are as good as it gets. The best bit? Every single thing on their menu is gluten free. Coeliacs line up!
LOFT | BYRON BAY
Loft is the perfect place for some post-beach eats and drinks. Cocktails galore, Loft will quench your thirst while you people watch above the busting Jonson Street. Grab some share plates and indulge with the girls or maybe chicken sliders are more your speed?
DOMA | FEDERAL
Federal’s Doma is the ideal mix of authentic Japanese and Australian fusion eats. Located in a 107 year old building in picturesque Federal, Doma offers a friendly atmosphere and promises to fill all bellies. Thirsty? Wash down your meal with some sake straight out of Japan.
WATER SPORTS GURU | KINGSCLIFF
These guys have all your water sport needs sorted. From kayaking in Cudgen Creek to snorkelling on the Cook Island Reef, they’ve got it all happening. Need a kids party organised while you’re visiting? Tim and his team will make it a day to remember for the kiddies.
SKYDIVE | BYRON BAY
Are you a bit of a thrill seeker? Skydive Byron Bay will take good care of you! Jumping out of a plane has never looked so good, overlooking Cape Byron and Byron’s pristine beaches.
HIGH TEA | FLUTTERBIES TYALGUM
This technically could have gone under the Eat heading, but high tea is just so fun! Dress up for the day and head out to Tyalgum for a quaint high tea with your loved ones.
TWEED REGIONAL ART GALLERY | MURWILLUMBAH
Art enthusiasts, this one’s for you! Showcasing fine art from Australia’s most talented artists. The Tweed Regional Art Gallery is a great way to spend your day. Grab a cake and coffee at the café overlooking the Tweed Valley, and make sure you don’t leave without visiting the Margaret Olley Art Centre!
HUSK DISTILLERY | TUMBULGUM
Who doesn’t love gin and white rum? Book a distillery tour at the stunning Husk Distillery, or just visit for lunch and a cheeky tipple.
Northern New South Wales has a whole lot to offer. Take a road trip and indulge in all this beautiful part of the world has on show. Visit for the day or stay a while!
