Spice Up Self-Isolation With These Top Shows

Is it just us, or has March 2020 been the longest year of our lives? Things are uncertain and frankly a little scary right now, but experts all agree that the best thing you can do for yourself and your community is to stay home. Luckily for you, though, social distancing doesn’t apply to your sofa. Here are some of the best TV shows (and one movie, we couldn’t resist) to stream if you, like us, love a good Netflix sesh.

The Witcher

Platform: Netflix

For fans of: Game of Thrones

Rising from the high-fantasy ashes of shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings, The Witcher was originally a book series that has been adapted not once, but twice by video game developer CD-Projekt-Red, and now by Netflix as well. The first season features outstanding female characters, killer dialogue, and Henry Cavill horseback riding in very tight leather outfits. Need we say more?

Platform: Netflix

For fans of: Breaking Bad

Dark, twisty, and suspenseful, Ozark is the one for you if you like being on the edge of your seat – or if you listen to more than your fair share of true crime podcasts (…same here). This series follows a Chicago family who is forced to flee to the Ozarks after its patriarch talks his way into a shady business deal – and that’s all we’ll say for now. The rest is for you to uncover next time you’re looking for a new and exciting thriller.

Sex Education

Platform: Netflix

For fans of: Degrassi

For lovers of teen dramas that tackle real issues, Sex Education is truly one of Netflix’s crown jewels. Following the lives of high schoolers Otis, Eric, and Maeve, this show will have you in side-splitting laughter one minute and moved to tears the next, all the while suspended in a dreamy forest setting where everyone dons iconic 80’s attire. Not to mention the incomparable Gillian Anderson, who brilliantly plays the show’s resident sex therapist.

Kath and Kim

Platform: Netflix

For fans of: Summer Heights High

Kimmy look at me… this Australian comedy staple needs no introduction. If you’re feeling especially nostalgic, or you haven’t yet seen the whole show from front to back, then now is an excellent time to settle in with some Kim-approved (and decidedly Kath-unapproved) snacks.

Jane the Virgin

Platform: Netflix

For fans of: Gilmore Girls

The genre of wholesome family dramedy is taken to new heights with Jane the Virgin, a show about what happens when a twentysomething high-achiever named Jane is accidentally artificially inseminated…what a premise, right? What makes this show so compelling is its combination of down-to-earth characters experiencing real-life interpersonal challenges, and a plot taken straight out of a Latin-American telenovela. Perfect binge material, if we do say so ourselves.

Married at First Sight

Platform: 9Now

For fans of: The Bachelor

If you’re a sucker for jaw-dropping drama, look no further than Married at First Sight. This all-Aussie dating show sees 4 couples meet for the first time at the altar, and lets viewers witness the drama unfold as emotions run high.

Brooklyn 99

Platform: Netflix and SBS

For fans of: The Office

It’s official, fast-talking comedies are officially in vogue, and frankly we can’t get enough. Neither can fans of Brooklyn 99, apparently – when Fox canceled it in 2018, the social media outrage was enough to get NBC to pick it up again in an unprecedented move. Brooklyn 99 follows a group of New York City cops on their adventures and in-office politics, and it’s the perfect daily dose of humor to get you through self-isolation. Nine nine!

Platform: Netflix

For fans of: The Crown

If you’re anything like us here at The Good Guide, you love a good period drama, and Netflix’s Outlander certainly scratches that itch. The story follows Claire Randall, a WW2 nurse, as she is swept back in time and into a whirlwind romance and a world wherein her life is on the line. Not for the faint of heart, this series is sure to awaken the romantic in you.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Platform: Netflix

For fans of: 30 Rock

This musical comedy follows Kimmy Schmidt – as portrayed by The Office’s Ellie Kemper – a young woman who has spent her entire adult life in an underground bunker who is now faced with (hilariously) navigating life in the Big Apple. As an added bonus, it features one of the catchiest TV show intros of all time.

Platform: Netflix

For fans of: Pitch Perfect

Ok, so this is technically cheating, but we had to throw at least one film into the mix – and it’s on Netflix, so it counts! XOXO follows a group of strangers whose paths collide during a fateful night at an EDM festival, where a young DJ is given a once in a lifetime shot at the spotlight. If you’re looking to escape (or you’re a Chris D’Elia fan), you’ll love XOXO.

Platform: Foxtel Go

For fans of: Big Brother

A true classic, GoggleBox is the lighthearted, endlessly meme-worthy reality show we deserve during these trying times. The entire back catalog of highlights is available online for free at 10Play, or you can go all out and marathon every episode on Foxtel Go.
