GC Word on the Street #75

If you haven't caught on yet, the Coast is in the middle of its biggest party ever. We've got sporting feats in every major sporting center, concerts running on every Beach and roving entertainment right up and down the Coast! There's dance-off's, masterclasses and rooftop markets, and enough music and entertainment to fill every corner of the Coast. We've got 99 problems, but this week boredom isn't one of them.

Winter Holiday Masterclasses

Ever wanted to create the perfect brew, but never know how to do it? This month the team at Avani Broadbeach are pairing with local businesses to teach us all the secrets to surfing, cooking, coffee and even yoga with free masterclass sessions right around the coast. Immerse yourself in Island culture with a free Poke Bowl cooking class by Aloha Bar & Dining, or create the perfect cup at one of the Coast's most iconic cafe's, Elk Espresso. The best part? You get to eat the result!

Surfers Paradise Rooftop Markets | April 4-15 @ The 4217 Urban Village

The iconic Surfers Paradise Markets are back this Commonwealth Games, taking pride of place on THE 4217 Urban Village Rooftop Park! Sitting on the corner of Beach Road and the Gold Coast Highway, THE 4217 will embrace the Festival 2018 atmosphere, opening their doors from 4pm to late for locals and visitors alike to enjoy everything that the Surfers Paradise Markets has on offer. Explore the racks for something unique as fire jugglers and salsa dancers provide roving entertainment, or sit and stay at one of The 4217's delicious providores.

Weaving Water Stories | April 5-15 @ Kurrawa Park Broadbeach

Celebrating water through art, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women Freja Carmichael and Lisa Sorbie-Martin share their weaving experience with us in a creative and intimate weaving class. Running from 9am every day during the Games, listen to ancient water stories as you learn the art of weaving, and add your creation to a larger piece as part of Festival 2018.

Soil To Supper | April 14 @ NightQuarter Helensvale

Are you a green thumb, or a serial plant killer? NightQuarter is hosting a series of interactive workshop for green and not-so-green thumbs alike, running through all the steps for creating and maintaining your own sustainable garden at home. Get your hands dirty prepping the space before you pick the perfect plants, then learn how to make it thrive in an educational and enjoyable evening among plants.

Silent Disco | April 5-14

Slip on some headphones and grab your dancing shoes - The newest craze has come to Festival 2018, and it's cooler (and quirkier) than ever! The silent disco is the newest craze sweeping the Coast this Comm Games, and all you have to do is show up, grab some headphones and start dancing. Running from the 9th - 11th in Surfers Paradise Esplanade then from the 12th - 14th in Chinatown Southport, you'll get the chance to dance to all the best tunes from the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's. Running for a full hour, each dance tour guide will bring new cool and quirky moves to the floor as you flash mob your way along the Coast. You bring the moves and they'll bring the headphones - But with just 50 headsets available, you better get your boogie on quick!

For as long as I can remember I’ve had a passion for all things creative, and so when it came time to choosing my degree it was only natural that I gravitated towards studying Creative Writing at Griffith University. I’m in my final year of University now and plan to graduate in November, but when I’m not out at University you’ll often find me curled up in some secluded corner of my house with headphones and a good book or brewing coffees down at my local Café. Occasionally you can also find me outside with my partner, family or dog, but only when the weather is warm enough. I love the rain and cold weather, but only if it’s outside and I’m inside. Born and raised on the Gold Coast, good beaches, good vibes and good company are some of my favourite things in life.
