Heartwarming Helpers

Don’t you love that soft gooey feeling you get from doing something good? From helping someone out, whether it be a friend moving house or a stranger who’s a few dollars short at the check-out. And despite the fact that you may have whinged while lugging that couch up an impossibly small stair well, at the end of the day it’s worth it for the karmic kudos. This list of volunteer organisations includes a little something for everyone so all of us can get those buzz-inducing brownie points.

A cuppa, a conversation and a bite to eat is something we all enjoy and that’s the idea behind Rosie’s. Operating out of Surfers Paradise and Southport this service offers friendship and food for the homeless and the marginalised. BBQ breakfasts and lunches are served up in Southport every week so grab an apron and some tongs and get sizzling.

Orange Sky Laundry

The first of it’s kind in Australia and indeed the world, Orange Sky Laundry brings its mobile laundry service to the homeless to wash clothes and bedding. What began in Brisbane has now spread to five different locations in Australia including the Gold Coast. The van, which contains two industrial sized washing machines and dryers travels to parks and drop in centres across the city. If you fancy yourself to be a bit of a whizz on the washing machine head over to the website to get involved.

The Smith Family

The Smith Family’s Homework Learning Club gives disadvantaged primary school children the chance to improve their literacy skills with a team of dedicated volunteers. The word homework may have induced an instant coma in you but realise that you could open a child’s eyes to the wonders of Harry Potter, Oliver Twist and other such literary legends. Spread the magic, it’s worth it.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is not just your favourite steak on rollerblades. This great organisation delivers meals to the elderly, giving them the ability to live at home and remain independent and sassy. Volunteers can choose to be a driver, drivers assistant or help to cook the meals in the kitchens. Feel good food all round.

The University of the Third Age North Gold Coast

Have a passion for painting, a penchant for poetry or a taste for Tai Chi? Share your skills at the University of the Third Age. The University of the Third Age or U3A runs academic and skills based courses for the elderly. Offer your teaching services to these willing students, where learning is pleasurable, communal and sociable.

Gecko Gold Coast & Hinterland Environment Council

Gecko Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council works wonders with our local beaches, forests, rivers, and waterways. They have a whole range of volunteer positions available including fundraising assistance and reception work. If your thumbs are a little greener get involved in the Bushcare team where groups work in natural environments to restore plant life and improve habitat for native animals.

The guys at the RSPCA are always on the look out for volunteers to help care for our furry and feathered friends. A menagerie of positions are available at any one time including reception work, dog walking, animal fostering and op shop assistants.
