GC Word on the Street #45
Salt, sand, swell!
The coast is kicking off another week of weird and wonderful events, from soda-making to live skating. Pack your car with all your wackiest mates and drift down to see some local talent. They might just teach you something new. Show ‘em how to party.
Swell Sculpture Festival| Currumbin Beach
Connecting people, art and place, the ten day festival inspires through master classes and sculpture workshops. Annually, constructions decorate the beautiful beaches of the coast for an outdoor exhibition. Live music kicks up the vibe. A showcase of all the best forms of local talent.
Shakafest| Miami Shark Bar
After a wicked kick off last year, Shakafest is back bigger for a stellar second show. Bangin’ tunes will have your body grooving, as mosh-legends Grinspoon, DZ Deathrays, Horrorshow and Butterfingers headline the show. The place where street, skate and music meet. Surf Rock, Grunge, Aussie Hip Hop, graffiti art and a massive half pipe with skater demos all add up to make the raddest brain-melter of all days. Test your shakas beforehand.
Rise for the Reef | Burleigh Heads
The third event of the Jala Yoga Reef movement, focusing on supporting the local Wangan and Jagalingou people to save and protect their sacred country. Digeridoo and crystal bowl healing are set to harmonise the space, while yoga and guided meditation encourage reflection. Grab your pals and head down to make this event better than ever before!
Colette Store | Australia Fair
Colette by Colette Hayman has officially opened its doors. The island vibes launch party kicked off on August 12th, where guests sipped on champagne and fresh coconuts. The brand draws inspiration from international catwalks, bringing all the hottest accessory trends to one place. A store full of must-haves.
Kombucha & Sauerkraut Workshop | Upper Coomera
A Kombucha class and Sauerkraut demonstration that is sure to draw in the long-haired, health-conscious yogis of the coast. The fermented cabbage is famous for topping hot dogs and Kombucha is famously known as ‘hippie soda’. Taste testings and take home kits will have you converted before you can say kom-bu-what?

I’m a creative-visualist that loves bees, beers and devouring well-written books. A 70s babe, born in the 90s. I appreciate marmalade skies, write poems exploring female sexuality and equality and walk barefoot along off-beaten tracks. You’ll find me searching through vintage stalls, staring at obscure art, helping out at local markets, crowd surfing at live music events and sampling every acai the coast has to offer. As a certified Nutritional Therapist, I advocate sustainable living in the sun, the salt and the studio, a statue in Warrior II.
