Cure The Winter Blues

7 Things You Have To Do This Winter

Cure The Winter Blues

Well, Winter is here. Say goodbye to the long days and short nights, the warm weather and bright, sunny skies. We're lucky enough that we only really experience cold weather for a few weeks out of the whole three months (thanks Gold Coast!), but unless you plan on being a recluse for the entire season it's a good idea to seek out some Winter alternatives to keep you occupied.

Hit the Spas

There's nothing quite like going to a spa in Winter... Particularly considering when you get out you're not hit by another wave of heat. The Coast is full of hidden retreats, and the cooler months are the perfect time to acquaint yourself with your local stream room, spa house or hot tub. Hit up the steam room at The Bath House in Burleigh, or soak in the warmth of hot stones at Azure Spa in Broadbeach or SpaQ in Surfers. If you're up for a little more of a trip (or looking for the perfect daytime getaway), make sure you don't miss out on Halcyon House in Cabarita. Decked out in blue and white and with a pamper menu that's totally to die for, you'll be hard-pressed to leave once you've arrived.

Get Your Craft On

There's something strangely satisfying about creating something of your own, so why not take the opportunity this Winter to get crafty! Grab some friends and book yourselves in for a session at The Craft Parlour, where you'll be taught everything from flower arranging to cushion creation in fun and intimate classes. If you're a little bit more partial to a glass of wine (or two or three), you'll be sure to love the local paint n' sip classes popping up all over the Coast. Grab a girlfriend or two and a bottle of your favourite red, then head down to your local crafty for a boozy evening of painting. No experience required!

Go Out Dancing

The best way to keep warm is to keep active... So why not make it fun and go out dancing? Surfers is full of bars and clubs for you to get down and boogie on, but if you're looking for a little less grinding you're in for a bit more of a hunt. But never fear - The Arts Centre is here! Home to all things art, culture and entertainment on the Gold Coast, the Home of the Arts also hosts their Dancing on the Green event at the beginning of every month, and it's the perfect opportunity to get out and have fun in the cooler weather. Dance to everything from African street music to Pacific beats, with plenty of all our favourite tunes playing from 4pm every month - Just don't forget your dancing shoes!

Try A Food & Wine Tour

It's finally possible to wear sweaters out in public without getting heatstroke, which means it's the perfect time to ditch the beach bod and enjoy all of the food you missed out on during Summer. There's new cafes, restaurants, bars and breweries popping up just about everywhere you turn right now, so picking one (or seven) to eat at this week should be a breeze, but if you're a little overwhelmed by all the food and drink it never hurts to hop on a tour and enjoy the best food that the Coast has to offer. Take your tastebuds on a culinary journey with The Stars next Grazing Tour, or sample work from Broadbeach's finest chefs at their inaugural Twilight Table. If you're not afraid to pull out your stretchy pants (and you're open to getting up from your seat), you can also book your place on the next Gold Coast Food & Wine Tour - Running most Saturday nights, it's the perfect way to sample everything the Coast has on!

Go Thrift Shopping

When the weather turns cold... It's time to go shopping! Whether you like the feel of the fabrics or you're more of an online shopper, there's nothing better than grabbing a coat and a friend and heading out to the shops to check out all of the latest Winter fashion trends. Whether your style is modern or vintage, classic or cool, we're spoiled for choice when it comes to thrift and boutique stores to visit along our beautiful sunny coast. Hit up your local Salvos or Lifeline for some super cheap (and sometimes super hot!) pieces, or if you're willing to spend a little more money don't be afraid to hit up some of the incredible boutique stores that litter the Coast. Check out Janine Edwards in Broadbeach or About A Girl in Nobbys, or go window shopping along Burleigh's bustling James Street and pick from one of the many boutique stores that line the street there. Full of vintage, hand-made and unique pieces, you're sure to find a gem among the racks.

Catch a Concert

We're all about our live music.... We have local artists playing on every corner, we have free concerts on every other weekend and we celebrate our local artists with whole weekends dedicated to them. Whether its celebrating local talent or throwing back to old favourites, the Gold Coast has plenty of free and cheap concerts ready to sweep all of your Winter worries away. In just a few days time we'll be dancing to songs from the 50's, 60's and 70's at the famous Cooly Rocks On Festival, and in just a few weeks time Surfers Paradise will be throwing it down with an incredible ten days of tribute music in one of the Coasts biggest tribute festivals, VIVA Surfers Paradise. Looking for something a little quicker? The Queensland Symphony Orchestra will be teaming up with the creator behind the tracks from Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Harry Potter and many to produce an incredible concert at the Home of the Arts on June 16th.... Does anyone want to buy me tickets?

Go on a Holiday

When the going gets tough... The tough go on a holiday! Sure, we'd all love to sit around shivering in the colder Gold Coast temperatures, but when the call of Tropical Islands reaches your eyes you just can't resist! While there's plenty to do around the Coast to keep you full, happy and hoppy all Winter long, there's no better time to go and explore the Pacific Islands than when the rest of the country is shivering through Winter. Check out everything that the Pacific Islands have to offer on a Pacific Islands cruise (bikini and beach hat required), or if you're wanting to stay in the country you can always travel up North. Winter isn't so bad when you're sailing in 25 degree weather in the Whitsundays, right?

For as long as I can remember I’ve had a passion for all things creative, and so when it came time to choosing my degree it was only natural that I gravitated towards studying Creative Writing at Griffith University. I’m in my final year of University now and plan to graduate in November, but when I’m not out at University you’ll often find me curled up in some secluded corner of my house with headphones and a good book or brewing coffees down at my local Café. Occasionally you can also find me outside with my partner, family or dog, but only when the weather is warm enough. I love the rain and cold weather, but only if it’s outside and I’m inside. Born and raised on the Gold Coast, good beaches, good vibes and good company are some of my favourite things in life.
