WAYS TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM THIS WINTER
BRRR, It's Cold In Here!
Winter is here on the GC which means… cold and flu season is in full swing! Unfortunately, it is kinda inevitable to get ill during this time of year. However, seeing as the world is currently in recovery mode from the pandemic, we are taking the steps to strengthen our immune systems during these colder months even more seriously! Here’s our little handy guide to staying healthy and avoiding the flu – or even the coronavirus! - this winter.
HEALTH IS WEALTH
The foundation for a strong immune system is living a healthy lifestyle! Every single part of our bodies functions a million times better when we take care of our overall well-being and choose to make good health choices. It’s all about self-care, baby!
NUTRITIOUS IS DELICIOUS
It goes without saying, an eating lifestyle that is high in nutrition is the most healthy and natural way to boost our immunity. Feeding your body with a range of plant-based foods is efficient in preventing colds and flus. So, definitely up your fruit (specifically citrus fruit) intake, as it is high in Vitamin C which increases the production of our white blood cells - the key to fighting infections. Of course, our daily servings of vegetables also aid in maintaining a healthy, regular system. So, instead of ordering UberEats tonight, opt for seasonal veggies and dark leafy greens instead!
SUPERFOODS MAKE IT ALL GOOD
Did you know that Manuka Honey holds so many health and medicinal benefits? This gem is a proven natural remedy for colds and flus as it is filled with immune boosting qualities and soothing effects. Adding a spoonful to your tea or foods can do just the trick. Mix in some other superfoods into your meals such as goji and acai berries, chia seeds, ginger and turmeric for improved immune support!
DEDICATE TO HYDRATE
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! H20… do we really need to say more? If good ol’ normal water is too boring for you, add in some citrus fruit for a flavoursome twist!
SLEEP AIN’T FOR THE WEAK
Rest is best for our mind and bodies! Getting inadequate amount of sleep weakens our immune systems, making us more prone to catching colds and flus. 8 hours of sleep is considered a good amount for us to function effectively, (but there’s no doubt those cold winter mornings will keep you bundled up in bed for a few more hours!) Your quality of sleep is just as important, so turn those phones and tv’s off to ensure a peaceful night’s rest!
EXERCISE TO ENERGISE
It’s definitely worthwhile taking some time out of your day to venture outdoors – fresh air, vitamin D and a workout are all beneficial to sustaining a healthy immune system! A little winter weight never hurt nobody!, but it is important to stay active regularly during this time as physical activity maintains the blood circulation in your body, flushes bacteria and improves our bodies’ ability to fight off any illnesses.
BE THE HYGIENE QUEEN
We should all be experts in good personal hygiene habits by now (thanks Covid!). However, if you need a reminder, upholding good hygiene will reduce the chances of any infections by keeping germs at bay. Washing your hands properly and thoroughly (don’t forget the thumbs!) with soap and water whenever necessary will stop an infection before it begins and avoids spreading it. And as we start to see hand sanitisers creeping back on the supermarket shelves, it’s a good idea to stay prepared before they disappear again!
